The piriformis is a small but mighty muscle located deep in the hips, connecting the lower spine (also known as the sacrum) to the top of the femur (or your thigh bone).

The primary role of the piriformis is to assist with external rotation of the hip, helping to turn your hip outward. It also plays a role in stabilizing the hip joint.

If the piriformis is tight, inflamed, or irritated, it can compress the sciatic nerve. This can lead to hip pain, lower back pain, and even pain that shoots down the leg (commonly referred to as sciatica).

The piriformis can become tight and inflamed due to long periods of sitting, overuse, or muscle imbalances.

Over the next several days, we’ll discuss ways to release your hips and glutes, increase mobility, and strengthen muscles to relieve symptoms and prevent them from returning.
