Athletes: How a Personal Trainer Can Help You

No matter your sport, you can benefit from working with a Certified Personal Trainer.

Athletes need to practice with their teams, and do skill development for their sport, but they also need to work on things like strength and flexibility so their bodies are in prime condition to perform. Working with a Certified Personal Trainer allows athletes to receive one-on-one attention to increase strength, power, and speed, while also improving flexibility and mobility to prevent injuries.

Whether your child is playing youth sports or preparing for high level competition in high school, Uno’s Fitness is ready to help prepare athletes for their sports.

How Uno’s Fitness can help athletes.

Khris Francis is a Certified Personal Trainer, but he’s also a former athlete. He knows what it takes to compete at a high level. As a state champion football player at Hillside High School, he received a scholarship to play football at UNC, then spent two seasons playing professionally in Germany. He’s trained at a high level, including with athletes who went on to play in the NFL. He knows what it takes.

A Certified Personal Trainer like Khris will create custom workout plans designed for the specific athlete, the sport they play, and the goals they have. The plan will focus on sport-specific movements and the strength needed to perform them. Athletes will work on addressing weaknesses and imbalances that could lead to injury, all while increasing speed and agility. A personal trainer will also teach athletes about rehabilitation and recovery best practices.

Khris has a level of expertise that is designed to help athletes. Not only is he a Certified Personal Trainer who has played football at the college and professional level, he also holds a degree from UNC in Exercise & Sports Science and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, the highest level of certification available in the fitness industry. This means Khris understands biomechanics, physiology, and kinesiology, aiding his ability to create a plan to improve performance.

Sport-specific needs.

While there are some things all athletes need to work on — like core strength or flexibility — there are some things that are specific to individual sports that a Certified Personal Trainer can help address.

Exercises that focus on speed and agility will include drills to increase acceleration speed, allow athletes to decelerate faster, and be more comfortable with lateral movement and change of direction.

Trainers will also work on sport-specific flexibility and mobility, creating routines that increase range of motion for specific areas of the body, while also identifying key areas for recovery based on the sport and position an athlete plays.

One-on-one training.

Not all athletes are the same. What one athlete needs to focus on may be different than what his or her teammate needs to focus on. This is why working one-on-one with a personal trainer can be a big benefit.

At Uno’s Fitness, any training program will begin by identifying the specific needs of an individual athlete. The trainer will assess the abilities of the athlete, then identify the areas that need to be focused on. For example, a football player may need to focus on strength, but a golfer may need to focus on range of motion.

Depending on the level of competition and age and ability of the athlete, trainers can incorporate activities like plyometrics, Olympic weightlifting, advanced footwork and speed drills, and other techniques to refine abilities.

Injury prevention and recovery.

Preventing injuries and assisting the recovery process when injuries happen is a key role for personal trainers when working with any client, but it’s especially true when working with athletes.

A personal trainer will create a specific workout plan designed for an individual athlete. This will help prevent overuse injuries because the trainer will minimize strain on the same muscle groups and adjust the routine as needed between the off-season and in-season workouts.

Trainers will work with athletes to teach them proper recovery practices, including stretching, foam rolling, and other strategies. Recovery plans can be adapted for a specific sport or position.

While working with a Certified Personal Trainer, athletes will correct imbalances and work on weaknesses within the body to help make the athlete less prone to injury. They’ll also learn how to train safely, warm up properly, and cool down after working out.
