Rotating or twisting your torso requires core strength, and that means rotational core exercises are important to add to your workout routine.

Some of the muscles involved in rotational movements include your obliques, which are responsible for twisting and bending to the side; the rectus abdominis, which allows your spine to flex during rotation; and the transverse abdominis, which stabilizes the spine and pelvis when rotating.

Working your rotational core will help you with functional movements in daily life, contributes to balance and stability, helps prevent spinal injuries, and can help with sports performance where twisting is required – think sports like golf, tennis, baseball, and martial arts.

Uno’s Fitness believes your core is so important that we incorporate core exercises into every single workout session.

Exercises For Your Rotational Core

There are many exercises you can do for your rotational core, but here are some of our favorites:

  • Russian Twists: Sit on the floor with your knees bent, lean back slightly as you engage your core while keeping your back straight. Rotate your torso side to side. To make it more difficult you can hold a weight or medicine ball while keeping your feet off the ground. If that’s too much, you can leave your feet on the ground.
  • Lower Body Rotations: While lying on your back, bend your knees at a 90-degree angle and lift them up off the ground. Lower your legs to one side as you tap, then engage your core as you bring your legs back up and rotate to the opposite side.

When you’re performing rotational core exercises, focus on using good form and don’t move too fast, this will help prevent injury. Engage your core throughout the exercises. Increase the intensity of the workout and the number of reps gradually, and use different types of core exercises to prevent overuse.

Why Your Rotational Core is Important

Your rotational core plays a key role in many of your day-to-day functions.

  • Allows you to perform many functional movements that require turning or twisting, such as grabbing something from the back seat of a car or lifting objects while rotating.
  • Some common activities around the house use your rotational core, such as shoveling and gardening, vacuuming, and sweeping.
  • Sports like tennis, golf, baseball, and softball use rotational core strength when swinging or hitting.
  • Sports that require kicking motions, like soccer or football, also utilize rotational core muscles.
  • Other recreational activities like snowboarding, martial arts, boxing, dancing, yoga, and pilates use rotational core.
  • All core muscles, including rotational core muscles, help people with balance and stability, which can help prevent falls and injuries.

Symptoms of a Weak Rotational Core

If you have weak rotational core muscles, you may notice some symptoms, such as:

  • Poor posture: You may notice you have a hard time sitting upright, your shoulders may round or you may slouch, and this can lead to strain on the lower back, shoulders, and neck muscles.
  • Decreased flexibility and mobility: If your rotational core muscles are weak, you may struggle to turn and look  behind you, experience stiff hips or lower back muscles, and have a reduced range of motion when twisting.
  • Balance issues: Weak rotational core muscles can leave you unsteady, especially when on uneven surfaces or stepping sideways. This can lead to difficulty with one-sided exercises, like lunges.
  • Poor performance: You may struggle to generate power from rotation while playing sports like golf or tennis.
  • Pain: Because other muscles have to overcompensate for weak rotational core muscles, there could be pain in the lower back, hips, or obliques.

Long-term weakness in rotational core muscles can lead to an increased risk of injury, especially in the lower back, hips, and knees. Worsening of posture, balance, and mobility issues can also occur.
